What you can do

  • Mass concentration C = m/V and mass-loading rate ṁ = Q×C.
  • Treatment removal efficiency and complete-mix concentration.
  • Water chemistry, first-order decay and reactor reference equations.
  • Educational environmental calculations with input constraints where supplied.

Formula and interpretation

A mass-loading calculation relates flow rate Q and concentration C through ṁ = Q×C. This is dimensionally correct when Q is in volume/time and C is in mass/volume, giving mass/time. Convert mg/L to kg/m³ before applying SI quantities to avoid thousand-fold unit mistakes.

Worked mass-loading example

A stream has Q = 0.20 m³/s and C = 10 mg/L. Because 10 mg/L = 0.010 kg/m³, the mass-loading rate is 0.20 × 0.010 = 0.002 kg/s = 2 g/s. For a daily load, multiply by 86,400 s/day to obtain 172.8 kg/day. This is a steady-flow illustration.

How to use the workspace

  1. Open the environmental engineering library via the button above.
  2. Search for Mass Loading Rate or Mass Concentration.
  3. Normalize flow and concentration units before entering formula variables.
  4. Record assumptions about steady flow, representative sampling and treatment-process conditions.

Assumptions and common errors

  • Sample representativeness: an instantaneous concentration may not describe an entire day.
  • Regulatory standards: a numerical result does not establish legal discharge compliance.
  • Unit conversions: mg/L, g/m³ and kg/m³ must be handled consistently.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between concentration and load?
Concentration is mass per volume; load combines concentration with flow to give mass per time.
Can I use the formulas for a wastewater project?
They are suitable for learning and preliminary checks, not a substitute for approved project criteria and professional design.
Are the equations available in Arabic?
The library includes English and Arabic formula labels and explanations for supported entries.
